Content

Puccini's beloved 1904 opera, presented in this acclaimed 1986 Teatro alla Scala production conceived by Japanese producer Keita Asari — notable for its authentically Japanese staging, sets, and costuming, featuring Japanese specialists in lighting, choreography, and design. The production is set against a Japanese ink-painting aesthetic with white paper screens, a Japanese garden of rocks and sand, and Cio-cio-San's wooden house. Internationally renowned soprano Yasuko Hayashi sings the title role. Conducted by Lorin Maazel.
