Content Description

Japanese pressing of Luis Buñuel's 1974 surrealist masterpiece Le Fantôme de la Liberté (The Phantom of Liberty), the second film in Buñuel's loose "trilogy of freedom" alongside The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) and That Obscure Object of Desire (1977). Directed by Luis Buñuel; screenplay by Buñuel with Jean-Claude Carrière; cinematography by Edmond Richard; production design by Pierre Guffroy; editing by Hélène Plemiannikov; produced by Serge Silberman.

An episodic, deliberately plotless surrealist comedy that subverts bourgeois convention, social norms, and narrative logic through a chain of loosely connected vignettes — beginning with Napoleon's 1808 siege of Toledo and drifting through modern France. Starring Monica Vitti, Jean-Claude Brialy, Milena Vukotic, Adolfo Celi, Michel Lonsdale, François Maistre, Jean Rochefort, Pascale Audret, Julien Bertheau, Adriana Asti, Claude Pieplu, and Michel Piccoli.

This pressing includes a substantial Japanese-language essay insert (visible in photos) — a multi-page critical analysis of the film written in Japanese, discussing Buñuel's career arc from The Golden Age (1930) through Tristana (1970) to this film, the film's relationship to The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, the nature of Buñuelian eroticism (citing Milena Vukotic's role), and a scene-by-scene thematic breakdown. This is an exceptional piece of supplementary material, likely produced for the Japanese art cinema market and rare to find intact.

The disc label reads 自由の幻想 (Jiyū no Gensō — "Phantom/Illusion of Freedom").
