This is the Japanese LaserDisc release of Mozart's Idomeneo (歌劇 イドメネオ 全三幕), filmed live at the Metropolitan Opera on November 6, 1982, published by LaserDisc Corporation / Pioneer Japan. The OBI strip is present and intact. Both individual disc sleeves are included, though they show age-related foxing/spotting consistent with storage over 40 years. This is a landmark operatic document: this production marked the Metropolitan Opera's first-ever staging of Idomeneo  (LaserDisc Database) , with an all-star cast assembled by James Levine.

About the Performance:

This historic 1982 Metropolitan Opera production was the company premiere of Idomeneo, conducted by James Levine with a production by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle.  (LaserDisc Database) The cast features Luciano Pavarotti in the title role, Ileana Cotrubas as Ilia, Frederica von Stade as Idamante, and Hildegard Behrens in a show-stopping turn as Elettra. The New York Times called it "one of the best things the Met has given us in recent years," and the Miami Herald described it as "a marvelous baroque fantasy." The performance was broadcast live on PBS as part of the Live from the Metropolitan Opera series.
