About the Production

Adriana Lecouvreur (1902) is one of the finest works of the verismo tradition, rarely staged outside Italy. This La Scala production pairs two of the greatest Italian soprano/mezzo voices of the 20th century: Mirella Freni as the title role and Fiorenza Cossotto as her rival the Princess — a legendary pairing. Conductor Gianandrea Gavazzeni was one of the foremost Italian opera conductors of his generation and closely associated with the La Scala house. This is an important document of late-career performances by both Freni and Cossotto in one of their signature roles.
