This is the Japanese LaserDisc release of Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera (歌劇 仮面舞踏会 全三幕), the complete opera filmed live at the Metropolitan Opera on February 16, 1980, published by LaserDisc Corporation / Pioneer Japan. The OBI strip is present and intact. Both individual disc sleeves are present. This is a landmark operatic document: Luciano Pavarotti's first Un Ballo in Maschera at the Metropolitan Opera, widely regarded as one of the finest recordings of his voice at its peak.

About the Performance:

This celebrated 1980 Metropolitan Opera production of Un Ballo in Maschera — directed by Elijah Moshinsky in his Met debut and set in colonial Boston on the eve of the American Revolution — features Luciano Pavarotti in his first Met Ballo as Riccardo, Katia Ricciarelli in her first Met Amelia, Louis Quilico as Renato, Judith Blegen as Oscar, and Bianca Berini as Ulrica, conducted by Giuseppe Patanè. The New York Times hailed Pavarotti as "peerless" in this role, and the production remains one of the most celebrated Met broadcasts of its era. The Japanese LaserDisc pressing includes Japanese subtitles and individual black sleeve disc jackets.
