This is the Japanese LaserDisc / CD Video (CDV) release of NHK Special: The Universe Within — The Human Body, Vol. 1: The Birth of Life (NHKスペシャル 驚異の小宇宙・人体 第1集 生命誕生), published by NEC Avenue Japan. This is the first volume in the landmark 1989 NHK documentary series — one of NHK's most celebrated productions and the first NHK programme to use comprehensive CGI throughout. Music for the series was composed by Joe Hisaishi (My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away). No OBI strip is present on this copy.

The Universe Within: The Human Body (驚異の小宇宙 人体) is one of NHK's most acclaimed documentary series, exploring the mysteries of the human body through cutting-edge CGI and microscopic photography unprecedented for its era. Vol. 1 — The Birth of Life — covers fertilisation, fetal development, and the 280-day journey from conception to birth. The series was a co-production with Swedish Broadcasting (SVT), RAI-3 (Italy), ABC (Australia), and France's Technisonor, and won the Science Broadcasting Encouragement Award. The score by Joe Hisaishi is a collector's item in its own right, having been released separately on LP and CD.
