Content Description

Volume 4 of NHK's landmark 銀河宇宙オデッセイ (Galactic Space Odyssey) documentary series. This episode tackles one of humanity's most compelling questions — Are We Alone? — exploring the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). The spacecraft Helios ventures deeper into the galaxy as the program examines the scientific basis for the possibility of life beyond Earth, the mathematics of probability of intelligent civilizations, and humanity's ongoing attempts to make contact. Features the SETI research efforts at the University of California, William Hartman, Carl Sagan's work, and observations from the Hawaii telescope research institute and Fronhoffer Research Institute. The cover artwork depicts a large radio telescope array on a Mars-like planet surface transmitting into deep space.

Co-produced with RIAS-TV (Germany). Music by Haru Takauchi. The series uses a proprietary RSS (Roland Sound Space) surround sound system for enhanced spatial audio.
