Content Description

The true finale — the final volume (最終集) of NHK's landmark 銀河宇宙オデッセイ (Galactic Space Odyssey) documentary series. The spacecraft Helios returns to Earth, and its six-person crew confronts what humanity has learned about its place in the cosmos. The episode meditates on life, DNA, and humanity's insatiable drive to explore — referencing the dreams of geologist Eugene Shoemaker (who longed to reach the Moon), the Hubble Space Telescope's first images from April 1990, Freeman Dyson's vision of a limitless frontier, and the frontiers of biological science as metaphor for cosmic exploration. The back cover features the Helios craft returning past a ringed planet toward Earth. Co-produced with RIAS-TV (Germany). Music by Haru Takauchi.
