About the Film:

King of Hearts is a whimsical anti-war comedy-drama directed by Philippe de Broca, starring Alan Bates as a Scottish WWI soldier sent to defuse a bomb in a deserted French village, only to discover its only inhabitants are the patients of the local asylum who have taken over the town. The ensemble cast includes Geneviève Bujold, Pierre Brasseur, Jean-Claude Brialy, and Michel Serrault, with a score by Georges Delerue. Though a modest release upon its original debut, the film became a massive cult classic in the late 1960s and 1970s — particularly in the US — and remains one of the most beloved French films of its era. It was later released in the US on the prestigious Criterion Collection LaserDisc (#115).
